The Copper Family are unusual in that they sing in simple harmony - rare in the English tradition. Associated with firstly The Folk Song Society, and subsequently the English Folk Dance & Song Society, their music was originally collected by Kate Lee in 1896. Patriarch Bob Copper, who died in 2004, was a celebrated author and was awarded the Robert Pitman Literary Prize in 1971 for the story of the Coppers in his book ‘A Song for Every Season’. Today the family is represented by his son and daughter John and Jill, Jill’s husband Jon and Bob’s grandchildren. They sing the songs handed down through at least seven generations.
