Schools and Colleges

I’ve seen a lot of work by EFDSS over the years, and I’ve never failed to be impressed – it’s always well-thought-out, rigorous, and a lot of fun!
Deborah Rees, Head of Camden Music Service

At the English Folk Dance and Song Society run high quality, creative projects and workshops for children and young people throughout the education sector.

Our children got so much out of learning about their locality – it brought our community closer together, which is not always easy, and it was an affirming experience for all of us
Primary Teacher, Lincolnshire

We provide exciting opportunities for all age groups to engage with folk music, dance and song – and to learn about our dynamic, living, folk heritage.

We work with schools, colleges, universities and youth organisations.

Our projects are led by professional folk artists who are skilled and committed educators.

Popular topics

  • Folk song: singing, arranging, creative song-writing and performance
  • Ceilidh band: learning folk tunes by ear, arranging and playing for dancing
  • Dance: English country (ceilidh), morris, sword, step and clog, maypole

Our award-winning Resource Bank contains hundreds of freely downloadable resources to help educators bring folk arts to life in the classroom.

We offer bespoke creative learning projects for individual primary, secondary and SEN/D schools – at all key stages from Early Years to Key Stage 5.

We had students take part we wouldn’t have expected to get themselves involved... It was also excellent for students to experience music from their heritage/culture.
Secondary Music Teacher, Essex
