Going green at Cecil Sharp House

Monday 5th of August 2019

At the English Folk Dance and Song Society and Cecil Sharp House we are committed to improving and advocating environmental best practice across all areas of the organisation.

We have signed up to Music Declares Emergency – a group of artists, music industry professionals and organisations who stand together to declare a climate and ecological emergency and call for an immediate governmental response to protect all life on Earth.

We also work with Julie’s Bicycle, who support the creative community to act on climate change and environmental sustainability, specifically by helping us to monitor and set goals for reducing our carbon footprint.

With our catering franchisees Pink Food we are working towards becoming a plastic-free venue. We kindly ask our guests, ticket holders and hirers to bring refillable water bottles to fill at our water fountain in the cafe, rather than bringing single-use plastic bottles into the venue.

Later in 2019 we will be launching a reusable pint and half-pint cup scheme for all of our events catered by our cafe and bar, so that you can keep the same cup and refill it all night for a refundable deposit.

In our offices we have switched our stationery products to eco-friendlier versions wherever possible. Around the building we are switching to LED lighting, with movement sensors where possible.

At our box office we no longer issue printed tickets: all tickets are now emailed.

We recycle batteries, light bulbs, electrical and IT items and printer cartridges. We use waste management company First Mile, who send zero to landfill and use carbon-neutral vehicles. Any business waste that can’t be recycled is safely incinerated to produce green heat and electricity.

Our next goal is to appoint a green energy supplier, and we are also investigating the options around solar panels.

We are always looking for new ideas! If you have any suggestions for how Cecil Sharp House can become even more green, please email Rosie Baker, Operations Director: This email address is being protected from spambots.
