Heg & the Wolf Chorus

Wednesday 2 October

The band are back on the road, drawing inspiration from folklore, fairytales, family stories and even modern-day myths. With four musicians on piano, flute, fiddle and double bass, and songwriter Heg Brignall’s bright and enchanting vocals, tight four-part harmonies create a cinematic depth to these theatrical folk songs.

The Road to Peterloo - Ballads & Broadsides

Top North-West singers and musicians Pete Coe, Brian Peters and Laura Smyth tell the story of the 1819 Peterloo Massacre in Manchester through ballads composed at the time.

Rosie Hood is known for her strong, pure voice and captivating performances. A spine-tingling traditional folk performer, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne is a fine player of both the melodeon and anglo concertina.
 

Rising Up: Peterloo 2019

Thursday 24 October

In 1819, the concepts of freedom of speech, protest and democracy were tested when armed soldiers charged at peaceful protesters. Two centuries on from Peterloo Massacre, this commission tells the stories of two women across time but linked through experience, as they struggle to rise up and find their voice.
 

Louise Jordan - 'The Hard Way'

Wednesday 30 October

This one-woman show tells the extraordinary true story of a working-class woman who became a magistrate and a key figure in the suffrage movement.

Ye Vagabonds

Saturday 2 November

Brothers Brían and Diarmuid Mac Gloinn grew up playing music together in the south-east of Ireland. With their thoughtful lyrics, thickly layered with strings and droning harmonium, their repertoire incorporates Irish traditional music, Appalachian singing, and elements of the 1960s folk revival.

Hot Club of Cowtown

Tuesday 5 November

Texas-based Hot Club of Cowtown may be the world’s most globe-trotting, effervescent string trio. Their joyful sound blends the traditional Western swing of the American southwest with European hot jazz influences of the same era.
 

Ben Walker and Rob Harbron

Wednesday 6 November

Firmly established as two musicians at the very top of their game, Ben Walker and Rob Harbron are building on their ‘The Lost Tunes’ project for EFDSS. This evening of spellbinding music, and the stories behind it, combines solo sets with traditional and original tunes.

The Local Honeys

Wednesday 13 November

Kentucky-based country-folk duo The Local Honeys have dedicated themselves to the preservation of old music and the creation of new music. They bring together the rolling hills of the Bluegrass and the foothills of the Appalachian region: ‘bluegrass kissing the mountains’.
 

AKA Trio

Thursday 14 November

The AKA TRIO is an international musical summit meeting of three world-renowned virtuosos: Antonio Forcione, Seckou Keita and Adriano Adewale.
 

Trad Night: John Kirkpatrick

Wednesday 20 November

John Kirkpatrick is one of the most prolific figures on the English folk scene. Whether performing in duos, acoustic groups or electric bands, he has an enviable reputation as a virtuosic interpreter of English folk music.
 

Darlingside

Thursday 21 November

Boston-based quartet Darlingside have been renowned for their signature superpower harmonies, drawing frequent comparisons to late-60's era groups like Crosby, Stills & Nash; Simon & Garfunkel; and The Byrds.

 

Twelth Day

Wednesday 27 November

Twelfth Day are happy to be hard to define. With two distinctly different voices of the fiddle and the pedal harp, they build layer upon layer of a complex and ever-evolving sound, rich with rhythm, harmony and texture.
 

Martin Simpson

Saturday 30 November

Martin’s new album features a mixture of Simpson originals and traditional songs and tunes, with guest appearances from friends old and new. As ever Martin is pushing in new directions – expect exquisite ensemble playing and solo magic.
 

Richard Shindell

Wednesday 4 December

Richard Shindell examines liminal spaces as both an immigrant and emigrant, crossing thresholds and illuminating the human experience. His songs paint pictures, tell stories, juxtapose ideas and images, inhabit characters – vividly evoking entire worlds along the way and expanding our sense of just what a song may be.
 

A Bright New Year with Melrose Quartet

Thursday 5 December

A Christmas Concert like no other! Joyous seasonal music; rousing village carols from the Sheffield area; dressing up; games with prizes; lots of choruses to join in with… and an award for the most memorable Christmas jumper. Melrose Quartet make music that connects with people – truly, music for everybody.

Sam Kelly & The Lost Boys

Sam’s meandering musical journey has ranged from singing to hurtfully disinterested Friesians and reaching the final of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent as a teenager, to becoming one of the most prevalent folk singers of his generation.

For many, Christmas doesn’t start until The Albion Christmas Show… The combined talents of Simon Nicol (Fairport Convention), Kellie While (Albion Band), Simon Care (Edward II) and the Guvnor himself, Ashley Hutchings, celebrate Christmas both traditional and contemporary. 
 

Catrin Finch and Cimarrón

Thursday 6 February

Back in 2007, Welsh harpist Catrin Finch met with Colombian joropo band Cimarrón and embarked on an exhilarating tour of Wales, a collaboration repeated in 2009 and 2010. Ten years later, Catrin and Cimarrón meet again to tour the UK.

   

Belinda O'Hooley

Saturday 28 March

Belinda O’Hooley is an exceptionally gifted pianist, singer, songwriter and composer. She is one half of the duo O’Hooley & Tidow whose song ‘Gentleman Jack’ features as the closing theme song for Sally Wainwright’s latest BBC drama series of the same name.
