Tom Moore, folk musician, composer and producer, joined London Youth Folk Ensemble on 3 March to share his passion for electronics in folk music. This fantastic session was the first of a series of extra development opportunities made possible this year by the Music for Youth Connects Award, presented to LYFE last October at the Music for Youth Primary Proms, Royal Albert Hall.
London Youth Folk Ensemble has been partnered with the Musicians’ Union, who are supporting us to develop artistically as an ensemble. Five members of the Ensemble enjoyed a visit to head office last month led by Diane Widdison, National Organiser – Education and Training, learning more about the organisation, and how they help and support folk musicians.
London Youth Folk Ensemble have decided to use this award to develop their understanding of electronics, inviting three guest musicians/producers to help them experiment, record and mix their first tracks. Tom Moore will be followed by John Dipper, folk musician and composer, in May, who will guide LYFE through the process of recording three downloadable tracks. In June, Ben Corrigan, composer and producer, will work with the band to mix their tracks, and explore post-production electronics, ready for download.

Two members of LYFE, Mia Iles Pérez and Gabriel Harvey, joined leader Emily Askew and Cassie Tait, EFDSS Education Manager, at the Music for Youth Connects Celebration Event, on 10 October, 2018 where they were presented with the MFY award and met John Shortell from the MU. The event took place at the Royal Albert Hall, where we also were given the opportunity to watch inspiring performances from young musicians from across the UK in a MfY Primary Prom.
