Building on successful holiday courses, and with the generous support of Postcode Community Trust, a grant-giving trust supported entirely by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, the English Folk Dance and Song Society are delighted to launch Folk Unlimited. These new band sessions for disabled young people aged 12–24 years old, their friends and carers, are supported by a wider Inclusive Folk outreach and development programme.
Folk Unlimited will take place at Cecil Sharp House on selected Sunday afternoons, and kicks off with a free sampler session on Sunday 20 January.
These creative, inclusive, multi-sensory sessions will focus on the great folk music, dance and songs of Britain and beyond. Led by folk musicians Emmie Ward and Joe Danks, young people will use traditional instruments and accessible technology to arrange their own music based on folk repertoire. Folk Unlimited will also join forces with the London Youth Folk Ensemble, our other resident youth band at Cecil Sharp House, to share ideas, repertoire and performances over the year.
EFDSS will also be delivering outreach projects across Camden and neighbouring boroughs signposting young musicians to Folk Unlimited. To encourage and support more inclusive folk arts education, EFDSS will also be delivering training to folk educators.
