‘Keeping Folk Dancers On Their Feet!’ is for all morris, sword, step / clog and other folk dancers who want to learn how to dance longer and dance better! This one day workshop will focus on discussing and applying the principles of safe and effective practice to English folk dance, with consideration for both dancer and teacher.
Led by dance academic Edel Quin, this training day will ensure your dance practice is as safe as possible:
- Gain a basic understanding of relevant musculoskeletal anatomy, looking at muscles specifically involved in your folk dance style (eg morris, clog, sword)
- Look at the importance of warm up and cool down – sharing ideas to use in your own practice as a performer or teacher
- Highlight different needs for younger dancing bodies (children and adolescents), as well as considerations for older dancing bodies
- Meet and network with fellow dancers and professionals
Key readings, online resources, organisations and support networks for seeking future knowledge and support for safe dance practice will be provided.
About the class tutor
Edel Quin, BA (Hons), MSc, FHEA, is a former professional dancer and currently leads the Dance Science programme at the University of Chichester. Her performance experience includes five years touring with Riverdance, a stint on London’s Westend, and an original member of Henri Oguike's H20 Dance Company. In her teaching, Edel specializes in the application of dance science to the practice of dance across styles, ages and settings. She is co-author of 'Safe Dance Practice. An applied Dance Science Perspective', has published numerous educational and research papers and frequently presents her applied research at national and international conferences. In addition, Edel is a registered course provider with Safe in Dance International (SiDI), a trained Empowering DanceTM tutor and serves on the education committee of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS).
