Autumn edition of EDS remembers dancers lost at the Somme

Thursday 25th of August 2016

As autumn descends and the nights draw in, grab yourself a cup of something hot, pull a chair up to the fireside and browse the pages of the latest edition of EDS.

George Butterworth

This year marks the centenary of the Battle of the Somme, which wiped out a generation of young men. Amongst the fallen were four members of the English Folk Dance Society (EFDS), including composer, collector and Cecil Sharp’s collaborator, George Butterworth. Derek Schofield’s informative feature marks this important anniversary.

Pat Shaw

Whilst on the subject of centenaries, 2017 marks 100 years since the birth of Pat Shaw and Robert Moir tells us about a year of events to celebrate the life and work of this unforgettable man.

There was no-one like renowned singer, composer and collector Peter Bellamy, who died 25 years ago. Natalya Catton Wilson speaks to some of his friends, collaborators and those he has influenced about the legacy he has left.

Severn Suite

Dancing England was a highlight of the folk dancing calendar from the late 1970s before bowing out on a high in the 1980s. It’s back next year – Edwin Dyson tells us about its return. And dancing is at the heart of The Severn Suite which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year; Philip Freeman describes what it’s all about.

Steve Knightley

Jacqueline Patten chats to Steve Knightley about his love of folk music, while Terry Davey introduces us to his pub, The Blaxhall Ship – and its links with folk music, song and dance.

There are also regular features including news, reviews, dance events, festivals, lives remembered and much more.

The Autumn 2016 edition will be available soon
