Dom Flemons, "The American Songster" returns to Cecil Sharp House

Dom Flemons has accrued a remarkable CV over the course of his career. A founding member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, with whom he whom he won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album in 2011, Flemons is a skilled performer on a wide range of instruments including banjo, guitar, harmonica, fife, bones, bass drum, snare drum, and quills. Before playing music full-time, he produced 25 albums and even spent time pursuing slam poetry.

In 2014, the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS), in association with WOMAD, commissioned Dom to collaborate with legendary finger-style guitarist Martin Simpson, researching and performing material rooted in English and American folk traditions. Together Martin and Dom explored how folk songs travelled from England to North America and vice versa, changing shape as they journeyed. The partnership proved fruitful, and the duo are set to release their first album together in October 2016.

Aside from his work with Martin, Dom’s solo career continues to flourish. Last year he released his most recent EP What Got Over, a companion piece to his 2014 album Prospect Hill, and somehow alongside his relentless touring schedule the ‘American Songster’ has found time to launch a podcast.

Dom will be performing at Cecil Sharp House on Wednesday 20 July, followed by an engaging and inspiring American Folk Workshop on Thursday 21 July.
