Enrolments open for extended autumn adult learning programme at Cecil Sharp House

The English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) is delighted to be offering an extended series of classes and courses this Autumn, as part of its thriving adult learning programme at Cecil Sharp House. Please read on for details and to enrol.

Classes include the popular Monday Folk Choir Workshops, Saturday Folk Music Workshops, as well as a range of drop in classes for dancers and musicians. Building on the success of February’s Folk Guitar Workshop, we are also pleased to be offering an extended Folk Guitar Day this November. You can also delve into the world of English folk song with our one day Folk Song in England: level 1 course.

Saturday Folk Music Workshops

17 October | 7, 14, 28 November | 5, 12 December (times vary depending on workshop)
Fun, welcoming and expertly taught workshops in banjo, accordion, fiddle, song, melodeon, guitar, as well as Folk Band and Stepping Stones to Sessions for mixed instruments. Classes are led by folk artist-tutors Hazel Askew, David Delarre, Beth Gifford, Ed Hicks, Paul Hutchinson and Laurel Swift.

Monday Folk Choir Workshops

26 October | 2, 16, 30 November | 7 December, 7-9pm
Explore choral folk song arrangements in a relaxed and friendly environment with Hazel Askew.

Folk Song in England: Level 1

3 October, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Internationally published folklorist Steve Roud presents this popular introductory level day exploring the history of English folk song.

Folk Guitar Workshop

22 November, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Explore English folk guitar with Gavin Davenport, David Delarre and Ben Walker in this new one-day workshop supported by the Bert Jansch Foundation.

Folk Song Conference

Saturday 10 October, 10am – 5pm
A day presenting a variety of papers on various folk song topics, plus a panel discussion on the history of traditional song in England.

Cecil Sharp House Choir

Cecil Sharp House Choir is currently full, although we welcome people enquiring to Join the waiting list . See the Choir performing this autumn at the following:

  • Within the Waves - 19 November - Adriano Adewale presents his new large scale work for massed voices and percussion
  • Festive Gathering - 20 December - Carol concert with a folk twist

We also run the following popular evening drop in classes:

  • Monday Musicians – play and explore traditional music of the British Isles alongside other musicians
  • Morris Dancing – a fun, inclusive way of learning one of England's most iconic dances
  • English Country Dancing - learn British and American social folk dances, or play with the live band
