Maz O’Connor to join Canadian exchange

Monday 22nd of September 2014

Singer songwriter Maz O’Connor is the latest artist to take part in the English Folk Dance and Song Soceity (EFDSS) and Music PEI Artist Exchange programme that will see her join a tour of Canada with three other musicians.

Maz will tour with Ashley Condon in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island from 25 September to 2 October 2014.

Canadian fiddle player Tim Chaisson and Welsh singer Kizzy Crawford, who are performing their own short duo tour, will join the pair for the two final gigs.

Maz is an artist EFDSS has supported through our Aspire programme. We worked with Maz to secure a BBC Performing Arts Fellowship in 2013/14.

In 2013 EFDSS supported Maz, as a BBC Performing Arts Fund Fellow, on a year-long programme that saw her undertake a range of creative events; from mentoring sessions, to performance opportunities. She had access to resources, staff expertise, and rehearsal space at Cecil Sharp House in London.

Maz also attended industry conferences such as the international Folk Alliance to benefit from showcase and networking opportunities.

EFDSS Artist Development Manager Neil Pearson said: “This is a great opportunity for Maz as part of our ongoing programme of support to help her career.

“As well as giving her the chance to collaborate with new artists and create new music, it will expose a new international audience to English folk music.”

He added: “Previous EFDSS organised exchanges have led to long term musical partnerships between English and Canadian musicians that have gone beyond the original scope.

“For instance, Bella Hardy and singer songwriter Cara Luft who toured together in Canada last year and will be in performing in the UK this autumn, guested in each others sets when they were on the same bill at Shrewsbury Folk Festival this summer.”

The second leg of the tour will see Ashley Condon travel to England in 2015 to reprise her partnership with Maz for a short tour.
