Pre-Raphaelite pilgrimage and folk infused party

Friday 23rd of August 2013

This autumn the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS), the National Trust and Curiocity magazine will be embarking on a day-long pilgrimage from Borough High Street to William Morris' Red House in Bexleyheath, followed by a garden party with folk music, a hog roast and ale.

Discover the pilgrim routes that inspired Chaucer and the Pre-Raphaelites

You will arrive at The George Inn (77 Borough High Street, SE1 1NH) any time between 9am and 11am on Saturday 7 September, where you will be given a Pre-Raphaelite pilgrim passport, a route map and a free download of the audio guide for your smartphone. The audio guide has contributions from a wide range of experts including writer Robert Macfarlane, William Morris experts Anna Mason and Helen Elletson and Chaucer experts Helen Cooper and Barry Windeatt, and many more.

Pilgrims can travel by foot, bike, or public transport, through the green spaces of south London, past the wharves of Deptford, the Old Royal Naval College and the ancient oaks of Oxleas Wood. Along the way are four specially-created stops where you can create your own Morris-inspired artworks with invited artists. You'll hear the stories of pilgrims and Pre-Raphaelites past brought to life by professional storytellers.

As the sun sets, your quest will conclude in the intimate walled garden of the Red House and around its gardens (Bexleyheath, DA6 8JF) with a pilgrims' party, between 5 – 9pm. There will be skittles on the bowling lawn, a hog roast, local ales and live folk music by Josienne Clarke, Ben Walker and Jim Moray, curated EFDSS, as well as specially invited guest speakers.
