Folk Song in England: Study Day 'on tour'

Tuesday 6th of August 2013

Folk Song in England: catch a study day in your region

Unlocking hidden treasures of England's cultural heritage

Join us to explore the roots, development and social impact of English folk song and singers, with a focus on The Full English collections.

From September the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) and renowned national folklore expert, lecturer and editor, Steve Roud will hit the road – visiting Lincoln, Leeds, London, Bury, Gateshead, Bristol, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Cambridge and Sheffield – touring day-long Saturday study days.

Who should go to an event all about folk song?

  • Anyone tempted by the idea of exploring the roots, development and social impact of English folk song and singers. We'll be focussing on the period between 1850 and 1950.
  • People interested in delving into the history, development and purpose of folk songs collected in England
  • Beginners trying to find out about the history of folk song and the part it played in everyday life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a great place to start! You can know very little, or a great deal, and still find this day rewarding and interesting.

What will the day consist of?

Steve and a guest speaker (see individual event listings) with specialist local knowledge will lead the day. You will hear rarely played archival recordings and films of singers from across England. The sessions will be informal. There will be plenty of opportunities to discuss the topics covered and ask questions - two way coversation will be encouraged! You will not be required to sing during the day.
