Folk Dance Remixed: Audition Call Out

Thursday 9th of January 2025

Seeking folk and hip hop dancers, beat boxers and musicians

Folk Dance Remixed by David Jan

Folk Dance Remixed Auditions and Artist Sharing Day: Wednesday 22 January

Folk Dance Remixed is delighted to announce that it will be holding auditions to join the company on Wednesday 22 January at Cecil Sharp House. This artist sharing day, where dancers will have the chance to learn street and folk dance styles, and beat boxers will collaborate with musicians, is free and a fantastic opportunity to join in an inspiring workshop and meet new artists. There will be no obligation to audition on the day.

With over ten years of summer touring, in 2025 Folk Dance Remixed will be remounting their family show, Step Hop House, and developing Street Dance the Maypole workshops and Ceilidh Jams. The company is looking to widen their diverse pool of artists for these exciting projects.

The company welcome participants to dress in character - see here for vibe, with your favourite dancing shoes or instruments!

Artist requirements

Folk Dance Remixed is looking for a bassist, beatboxer and up to four professional dancers. Dancers must have at least three years’ experience in one or more of the following styles, and are open to learning the other styles within the show:
Locking
Krumping
Breaking
Popping
Whacking
Cotswold Morris
Percussive dance (Appalachian/Irish/tap)

Auditions

Auditions will take place:
Wednesday 22 January, 10am - 3pm
Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent’s Park Road, London NW1 7AY
Deadline to apply: Saturday 18 January
Auditions places are free, although they are limited, so registration is essential to attend.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals will take place:

Monday 3 - Wednesday 5 March, 10am - 6pm *
Monday 24 - Wednesday 26 March, 10am - 6pm *
Cecil Sharp House, 2 Regent’s Park Road, London NW1 7AY

Shows

Show dates are mostly weekends, touring across the country, with dates coming in throughout the summer.

So, if you’re interested in joining this groundbreaking company fusing folk with hip hop, love working outdoors, can be part of a team to build and strike the set with grace and good humour, are a good communicator, who will camp on the odd occasion and put their all into the show, then Folk Dance Remixed would love to hear from you.

Apply now

If you would like to audition, and are available on the rehearsal dates*, please email up to three showreel links of your work (on YouTube or social media), your CV and a short paragraph (100 words max) explaining why you’d like to be involved and what you will bring to the show and company to [email protected].
A current DBS will be a requirement to work with Folk Dance Remixed.
Auditions places are free, but limited, so registration is essential.

Applications are particularly welcome from male dancers, and artists who have a Global Majority heritage/background. For clarity we recognise Global Majority as a term for people that includes people of Indigenous, African, Caribbean, East Asian, South Asian, South East Asian, Latin American, mixed heritage and other ethnic groups who are often racialised as 'ethnic minorities'.

“I walked away with a smile! It was like seeing an old black and white Charlie Chaplin movie and watching it change into colour, traditional styles of dance, music and mime mixed with the new, beautiful and genius...” Lil Tim, breakdancer
