Safeguarding tools for members

Thursday 2nd of September 2021

We are happy to be working in partnership with Brass Bands England (BBE) on access to their BandSafe safeguarding programme for members of the English Folk Dance and Song Society.

Brass Bands England promotes, represents and supports brass bands across the country as one of Arts Council England’s Sector Support Organisations.

Over recent years BBE have developed their comprehensive BandSafe programme which is an industry leading selection of tools, training and resources to help people manage their band or music group in a way that safeguards all members from harm, and the group from possible reputational damage, whilst creating a healthy, positive atmosphere for all.

The informal, multigenerational music-making brass banding community has much in common with folk music and dance groups which makes this excellent programme potentially relevant to many EFDSS members.

Due to this partnership, EFDSS members living in the UK are now able to access BandSafe for the same discounted rate as BBE members.

This includes full access to:

  • BandSafe Toolkit of resources.
  • BandSafe safeguarding training.
  • DBS checks.
  • Body Of Persons Approval (BOPA) – for groups (not individual members) to have their youth performances covered under Child Performance Licensing regulations by the BBE BOPA (if they fulfil all the requirements).
  • Ongoing advice on safeguarding and child performance licensing issues.

To access the full BandSafe programme at the discounted rate you will need to

  • Be a current member of EFDSS.
  • Create an online account, if you do not already have one, and make sure that your membership is connected to it.
  • Log into your account and access the Member Benefits section at efdss.org/my-membership
  • Follow the instructions there from Brass Bands England about signing up to the BandSafe programme and purchasing relevant training and DBS checks.

We are planning to introduce more new services over the coming months, supporting EFDSS members in their various activities across practice, education and research in folk music and dance.
