Sessions and speakers
Warm up – Jon Dyer and Jenny Read will lead an energising warm up, showcasing techniques from Wren Music’s approach in schools for children with special education needs or disability (SEN/D) – known as ‘All Together Now’.
Creating Folk Songs of Tomorrow – four members of the Wren Music team (Marilyn Tucker, Paul Wilson, Sarah Owen, Rebecka Lyons) will guide you through three ways in which we create new English folk songs when working in community – with a chance to learn a short song from all three methods.
Devon and Torbay Music Education Hubs – Ben Van Weede will present the Hub’s plan for folk music, including outreach work for the Devon youth folk ensemble, working with young people for a county-wide Folk Day, a schools ceilidh band project, with dance, and incorporating folk song in their singing strategy. Ben will also talk about how the Hub can support folk practitioners with CPD opportunities
Cornish Dance Workshop – Lowenna Hosken, recipient of an EFDSS mini-grant for dance, will lead us in a Cornish dance workshop whilst talking about her work around inclusion, and how she is making Cornish culture and dance relevant to younger people today.
Black British History & Folk Songs – Angeline Morrison will introduce the new learning resource she is producing for EFDSS, and lead a group sing of one of the arrangements.
Update from EFDSS – on the National Youth Folk Ensemble and other aspects of their Education programme, from Rachel Elliott
Inclusivity and Relevance in Folk Songs – a discussion around how we choose material, what we might edit or change where material is challenging or unacceptable by current standards, and how we present it to be relevant for people today?
Presented by EFDSS in partnership with Wren Music.
And if you’re able to stay on later...
There will be a music session in the Fountain Inn in the evening too. The pub serves food, so stay for dinner, a tune and there’s sure to be a little dancing too!
