Online
£40 (£32 Under 26)

(full six seminar series)

This course has started, so booking is no longer available.

Steve Roud is widely recognised as one of our foremost authorities on folk song. Join him, with the English Folk Dance and Song Society, for this series of six evening online seminars on the social history of traditional song and singing in England up to about 1950 (when the post-war Folk Revival changed things dramatically).

This is a unique opportunity to learn from an expert in his field.Topics to be covered will include the changing definitions of ‘folk song’ over the last 200 years, the legacy of the early collectors such as Cecil Sharp and Ralph Vaughan Williams, and what the ‘folk’ themselves thought about their songs. We will listen to archive recordings and examine printed broadsides, consider female sailors and murdered sweethearts, and much more. The course is suitable for beginners and those already interested in the subject - and no singing will be required!
