English Dance & Song, Spring 2015

New issue of English Dance and Song available now

Summer has arrived, marking the height of our wonderful folk festival season.

In the summer edition of EDS, Jo Cunningham speaks to Alan and Sandra Surtees who started running their festival in Shropshire 20 years ago. She finds out about their journey, and what’s in store for festivalgoers heading to this year’s Shrewsbury festival.

Natalya Catton Wilson takes a trip to Mallorca to discover the delights of a folk festival with a difference at the Costa del Folk.

And for a guide to summer festivals closer to home, make sure you study our ‘Festival focus’ spread.

The renovation of Kennedy Hall is now complete and we are looking forward to our Celebration Ceilidh on 18 June. Alison Lewis gives us the lowdown the restoration went.

And talking of Kennedy, there’s a new archive been set up documenting Peter Kennedy’s many documents, photos, films and more at the British Library; archivist Andrew Pace tells us more about it.

Natalya Catton Wilson chats to Kate Rusby about folk and family, and catches up with John McCusker to find out about his 25 years as a professional musician.

Mary Neal and Daisy Dakings’ collections have been added to The Full English digital archive; discover more in Laura Smyth’s fascinating feature on these two pioneering women of folk dance.

Laura also tells us about Cecil Sharp and Mary Neal’s trip collecting in the Appalachian Mountains of America, the centenary anniversary of which we’re marking with a conference on 16 July.

There are also regular features including news, reviews, dance events, lives remembered and much more.
