Free online resources available on EFDSS Resource Bank

Friday 12th of June 2015

Freely downloadable learning materials created by the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) are now available via the new EFDSS Resource Bank.

Designed to inspire learning with folk, resources are suitable for use in formal and informal settings including: primary, secondary and SEN schools, youth ensembles, community choirs and adult learning and more.

Resources support learning in the school curriculum in music, dance / PE, drama, English, history, geography, PHSE and other subjects.

“Folk music IS relevant and hugely accessible for young people of all ages, and EFDSS has created an easy to use, inviting archive for us to celebrate this part of our regional musical heritage, in and outside of the classroom.”

Laurie Stewart, Head of Vocal and Instrumental Strategy, Bristol Plays Music

The Resource Bank contains over 100 resources and features three main components:

  • Beginners’ Guides – introductions to folk music, dance, song, drama, costume, customs and collectors
  • Resources and Teaching Tools – numerous, varied teachers’ packs for use in different subjects and educational key stages - many with audio and video files
  • Jargon Buster – an easy reference guide for folk related terms and phrases

“The Resource Bank shares many of the resources that are developed as part of our education programme and allows anyone, anywhere in the world to access them. Sharing these resources is part of our work to help stimulate more understanding and participation in traditional folk arts by a new audience and a new generation.”

Rachel Elliott, EFDSS Education Director

The Resource Bank was created as part of The Full English, a celebrated programme led by EFDSS between 2012 and 2014 which saw the creation of a new digital archive of important folk manuscripts and a national learning programme inspired by it. The Full English was supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund.
