Day in the life of an intern at EFDSS

Hello! My name is Caroline and I’ve been a Marketing intern for EFDSS for the past two months, and I wanted to take you through a day in my life at Cecil Sharp House :)

9:30am- I arrive at Cecil Sharp House. Say hello to everyone in the office and catch up about the weather or the weekend. Then we get to check emails!

9:45am- I meet with Honor, my supervisor, to chat about goals and projects for the day! I may be promoting gigs, working on event listings or anything of the sort. 

11:30am- It’s time to make a hot drink, most likely a tea to enjoy! 

1:00pm- Lunch! I may venture to Camden Market to pick up food or warm up my food to enjoy it in the garden (as long as the sun’s out). I also love taking a stroll in Regent’s Park if I have a couple extra minutes.

2:00pm- Back to the office! I’ll continue on the task from the morning or there will be a new project for me to work on. Today, I’m going to take a couple pictures and draft some upcoming social media posts!

4:30pm- Check in to see what else I can work on, so I’ll be researching upcoming projects and events at Cecil Sharp House. I’ll watch some videos and send out emails for promotion!

5:30pm- The end of the day :( Time to say see you tomorrow, and head to the tube to go home. I may stay late if I’m helping with a gig (which is always fun!)

The intern guide to EFDSS!

I’d like to say a little bit about myself! I’m an American university student studying abroad for the semester. My hometown is Nashville, Tennessee, the home of healthcare and country music, and I attend Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles for Theater, Education and English. I hope to work within the arts and education fields, so I’ve loved working at Cecil Sharp House. London and EFDSS has been a wonderful experience these past few months, and here are some personal top tips for anyone who may find themselves at an internship or job at EFDSS:

• Never forget to have a hot drink (and make sure to offer them to the office). Who wouldn’t want a mid-day tea or coffee!
• You’ll learn all the ways EFDSS does within Equity Diversity and Inclusion, whether it be resources for people with additional needs, LGBTQ folk (thehe), or people of minority communities. It is present in all the work they do. 
• Make sure you walk, there are too many cool places around Cecil Sharp house to miss, like Regent’s Park and Camden Market!
• Always rep your folk pin or EFDSS tote bag. It helps that they are also very cute :) 
• Prepare yourself, you may learn you really like folk music, even if you didn’t listen to it before you started working here!
• Always say yes to any snacks offered. (As an American, I’ve been able to try some very fun and new treats!!)
• Make sure you at least work one gig! I got to see the National Youth Folk Ensemble and their performance blew me away! 
• You’ll have the opportunity to learn about all that EFDSS does, whether it’s artist development, education, classes, gigs, or community events.
• Make sure to add emojis to social media posts, they’re just too fun. 
• Open yourself to learn about the history of folk and all of the people behind it. I’ve even got to learn about Appalachian folk as a Tennessean pretty far away from home. 
• You get the opportunity to work with some awesome, welcoming, and kind people, so just enjoy your time there!
