The UK government has opened a consultation on implementing the 2003 UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
‘Intangible Cultural Heritage can only be heritage when it is recognised as such by the communities, groups or individuals who create, maintain and transmit it – without their recognition, nobody else can decide for them that a given expression or practice is their heritage.’
The government is inviting engagement and views relating to the first stage of implementation: how the living heritages and traditions which are classified as ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’ will be defined and identified.
