Blog: my online work experience in folk

Monday 21st of September 2020

Last month we were happy to welcome Emily Ben Abdallah, as part of a scheme organised by charity Arts Emergency, to participate in work experience during our online National Youth Folk Ensemble summer course. Emily is 17 years old, lives in London, studies music and drama for A Level, is a keen singer, and has ambitions to go to drama school. She worked with us for 5 days and has written about her experience below.

'So this week I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to be involved in all things English Folk Dance and Song Society!

I must say initially I was a bit dubious as I know nothing about folk music as a genre and to be totally honest, visions of morris dancers and tambourines were forefront in my mind!

I’m glad to say though that I’ve had my eyes opened and gained a new admiration and understanding for folk this week. Dare I even say, I've enjoyed myself. I’ve particularly loved sitting in on the zoom rehearsals and listening to the progress of the recordings. Not only has the music been engaging and uplifting, I’ve appreciated the level of work and skill by all the brilliant young performers. Such a talented bunch deserve all the plaudits and rewards they get.

I hugely admire the dedication of the tutors and pastoral staff. The passion, and enthusiasm in drawing out the best in their talented crew has been inspiring. It’s been an absolute pleasure to shadow their teachings this week. I’ve enjoyed opportunities including taking part in singing workshops and watching clogging workshops.

I’ve been able to research and delve into the history and background of folk and have been involved in the administrative tasks that all go on behind the scenes!

All in all it’s been a rewarding,  informative and, most of all, fun week. I’ve truly enjoyed being part of your crew, albeit remotely and would love to actually take part in real life sometime in the future. May I thank each and every one of you for having me. You’ve made me feel very welcome. Wishing you all the very best with your future performances and hope to meet again soon.'
