Visiting the Library

Booking an appointment

You do not need to make an appointment to visit the Library and drop-ins are very welcome – but letting us know of your visit in advance does mean we can have material ready for you on arrival. This can be especially helpful if you are consulting large amounts of archival material or any sound material.

All archive materials must now be ordered 3-4 working days in advance should you wish to consult the originals. If you wish to view a particular item or collection, please use the 'Contact us about this item' link on the top right of the archive catalogue entry. Alternatively, email  [email protected], or phone +44 (0)20 7485 2206 ext.233 and give us the full details of what you wish to view, including the collection name, reference number, and title of the specific item(s) if applicable.

Reading Room Guidelines

Water bottles with secure lids are allowed but no other food or drinks, please. These can be consumed elsewhere in the building.

We ask that you please use pencils rather than pens when consulting material.

Complete silence is not necessary (the building can sometimes be quite noisy) but please take any phone calls outside the Reading Room.

For information on taking personal photos of material and making photocopies see our reprographics policies.
