Frankie Armstrong has sung professionally in the folk scene and women’s and peace movements since the 1960s. She pioneered community voice workshops in 1975, then continued her previous career as a trainer in social and youth work before focusing on voice workshops and singing.
Having been involved with folk and political songs, she’s always been fascinated by the way that voice can enhance the individual’s sense of well-being, creativity and confidence and develop a sense of community. It can link us to the thread of song that comes down to us from our ancestors. Hence, her interest in exploring voice and song in its historical, cultural, political and spiritual dimensions.
Amongst others, Frankie sang for the Anti-Apartheid and Anti-Vietnam War movements, and for Chile Solidarity. From the 1970s, she sang for the Women’s Movement, and the Greenham Common Campaign, along with the Campaign For Nuclear Disarmament. 'This all sounds very worthy but it involved a great deal of lively and spirited companionship, laughter and tears, and many a friendship. I’ve had such a blessed life that the least I can do is to offer my voice in this way.' - Frankie.
