Live Music Now: deepening folk roots

The English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) is proud to be supporting Live Music Now in their efforts to expand their network of folk and traditional musicians they work with.

Live Music Now (LMN), the UK's leading musician development and outreach charity, is recruiting new soloists and bands. They are looking for brilliant artists at the start of their careers, who communicate well with audiences. Sound like you, or someone you know? Read on!

LMN offers training and paid performance opportunities to emerging professional musiciands. They works with around 320 musicians each year, providing over 7,000 individual performance opportunities and more than 3,000 interactive performances for older people in care homes and for children with special educational needs across the UK.

LMN develop the potential of outstandingly talented players based in the UK, at the start of their careers, providing emerging musicians with paid performance opportunities, training and support in professional development.

Benefits of involvement with LMN

  • Professional experience: planning, performing, programming; developing the range of music you perform. This is invaluable training for dealing with your own bookings
  • Development of communication skills: a 'must' nowadays for musicians wanting to make a career out of music performance
  • Personal experience: meeting a wide variety of people in different settings which develops your personal awareness and the confidence to cope in any situation
  • A chance to reconnect with the reason you became a musician after years of focusing on technique and discover for yourself the power of music as therapy

Here at EFDSS we have spoken to many artists about their experiences of working with Live Music Now. The responses have been overwhelmingly positive and genuinely inspirational at times. Musician Dan Walsh sums things up nicely…

“Live Music Now has played such an important role in my musical and performance development. The necessity to be spontaneous and flexible and the ability to respond to challenging audiences has fed through to my other gigs and become a major part of my performances. On a purely practical level, LMN has been a crucial source of work and income as I have progressed my career. Having work in the daytime to go alongside evening gigs was particularly helpful when I was first professional! Emotionally, Live Music Now has thrown up so many extraordinary moments. Having a mental health rehabilitation patient say that I had brought him a step closer to recovery or watching a disabled child with no verbal communication react so positively to music were just two of so many moments of realising the power of music."
