A write up of Cecil Sharp House's first Youth Ceilidh on 27 November 2016 by Rowan Collinson, EFDSS Youth Forum member
On Sunday 27th November, Cecil Sharp House held its first ever Youth Ceilidh. Organised by the newly formed Youth Forum, it aimed to bring together 12-19 year olds from around London for an afternoon of music, dancing and cake!
For the first event of its kind, we were delighted with the turn out of around 25 young people, and the band, Ceilidh Tree featuring Will Rutter (guitar) and Jo Cooper (fiddle) got everyone up and dancing straight away. Caller Chris Faulkner's skill and enthusiasm meant everyone picked up the steps really quickly and the range of dances including partner, group and circular kept everyone on their toes.
In the break, the dancers had a chance to cool off and enjoy a range of delicious homebaked cakes and biscuits. It was also a great opportunity to get to know each other as for some it was their first visit to Cecil Sharp House. Feeling refreshed everyone was ready to get back to the dancing.
Two of us from the Youth Forum joined the band for the second half and it was a great experience playing for dancing. It was amazing to see everyone dancing so enthusiastically throughout the afternoon and the smiles on their faces said it all - dancing is great fun! The ceilidh ended with one last dance with Chris leading everyone (band included) into Storrow while the dance and music gradually sped up. What a great way to finish a fantastic afternoon!
The Youth Forum’s first event was a huge success and we are already making plans for another exciting Youth Ceilidh in the Spring and an amazing Takeover event in the Summer.
