King Kontra’s instrumental lineup of fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar and double bass creates a really special string band sound. Expect a perfect fusion of drive, energy and originality with steadier authentic Western Swing, Old Time and Irish. A terrific blend of original and traditional material played by masters of their instruments.
Adam Hughes has a wide range of dances in his repertoire, and particularly enjoys calling for Contra dances. Adam will guide the dancers through the moves to make sure everyone has a great time!
Contra or American style Ceilidh is fast, flowing dancing to fiddle-based music with many of the figures similar to those done at English Ceilidhs (or Barn Dances). You don’t need to bring a partner as you will dance with most of the other people in the hall during the evening and cannot help but come away happy at the end of the night.
Interval entertainment comes from Phoenix Morris, a side of Morris dancing men and women based in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire. Their dances are traditional Cotswold Morris Dances with some of their own dances developed on traditional lines.
Held at St Mary’s Church Hall, Church Street, Baldock, the evening starts at 8:00 p.m. (doors open at 7:30), and finishes at 11.00 p.m. Adults - £11, Seniors over 65 - £10, Children under 18 - £6, Students / unwaged - £8. First 6 students before 8 p.m. - FREE! Excellent value for a live band and caller! Parking is easy in the town centre; just walk to the church and you’ll find the hall in the church grounds.
