Anglo Canadian Exchange with
Music Prince Edward Island
The English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS) has teamed up with Music Prince Edward Island (PEI) in Canada to establish a musical exchange scheme.
In mid-September EFDSS Associate Artist Sam Carter, will travel to Prince Edward Island to work on collaborative material with , which will then be showcased in front of an industry and public audience at Showcase PEI 2012.
They will then do a four-day tour of the Canadian East Coast taking in Moncton, Halifax, Fredericton and Charlottetown.
The exchange will continue in October 2013 when Catherine will join Sam for a joint tour of England that will include a showcase performance at the English Folk Expo (EFEx) at The Met in Bury.
Sam said: “I was thrilled to be approached about this exciting project and delighted to have the opportunity to do a new transatlantic collaboration with one of Canada’s most talented roots artists.
“I can’t wait to see the results and have a chance to take these new works on to stages in Canada and England.”
EFDSS Artist Development and Programming Manager Neil Pearson said: “This new exchange will offer an exceptional creative opportunity to Catherine and Sam. It can be difficult to take time out to create new work so to be able to do that with celebrated international colleague is a unique opportunity.
“EFDSS and Music PEI are proud to have chosen artists that represent the creative side of the tradition in both countries. We have many shared roots as well as cultural experiences and links between our countries, and it will be fascinating to see the creative direction they take.
“The showcasing and concert performances in Canada and England will guarantee genuine development opportunities for Catherine and Sam in both countries; to have them perform at the inaugural EFEx conference in 2013 to both UK and International delegates is an exciting prospect.”
Sam won Best Newcomer at the BBC Folk Awards in 2010 and is a former Emerging Artist in Residence at the Southbank Centre. His new album The No Testament was released on August 20.
Catherine, voted ‘Critics Favourite New Discovery’ by Penguin Eggs magazine in 2008, is a renowned artist in her home country of Canada. A winner of Solo Artist of the Year at the 2009 Canadian Folk Music Awards, she has also picked up four Music PEI awards and won Female Solo Recording of the Year and Folk Music Recording of the Year at the East Coast Music Awards in 2010.
