Storytelling Course

Tales Tall & Small: Performers' Lab (Advanced)

Led by EFDSS Associate Artist and nationally acclaimed performance storyteller Debs Newbold, this new course is for those with some storytelling experience who wish to deepen their connection to their material and develop skills. Explore aspects of performance from voice and physicality to stage presence, and look at ways of engaging and challenging an audience. Participants should come to the class with one or two stories they already know well and wish to develop. The course will comprise group exercises, peer feedback, one-to-one input from the tutor, and will conclude with a storytelling performance. Come willing to experiment! For adults (18+).

Tutor: Debs Newbold

Debs has researched, written and performed stories for the Royal Festival Hall, Shakespeare's Globe, The British Library, The V&A Museum, BBC Radio, Sidmouth Folk Week, the Hay Festival and at a variety of  folk and storytelling clubs and festivals across the UK.  She also regularly tells stories in schools and at outdoor venues such as Hampstead Heath and Hampton Court.  Since 2008 she has been an Associate Artist of The English Folk Dance & Song Society, performing in countless concerts and events at Cecil Sharp House.  Since 2003 she has also been a freelance Education Practitioner for Shakespeare's Globe; lecturing, directing and leading creative, Shakespeare-based workshops for students and actors, as well as providing training to PGCE students and INSET training to teachers in the use of storytelling techniques.

Debs is currently the UK Lead Artist for a European storytelling project  which aims to encourage the use of storytelling and narrative in the classroom as part of an EU Education Commission.  She has also recently adapted three Shakespeare plays into storytelling performances, all of which have been performed at both The Globe Theatre and the Hay Literary Festival.
