This
learning resource contains our first DVD, a separate CD with all the
music you need and a 24 page booklet with clear instructions to enable
you to learn 13 Country Dances and a Morris stick dance called Bean
Setting from Headington, in Oxfordshire. This resource was originally
produced for the BBC by Ron Smedley and is divided into three programmes.
All the movements and techniques are broken down into bite-sized pieces
to enable easy learning for all ages. The children demonstrating the
dances have picked up the patterns easily and you can see from the
evening dance footage all ages can join in the fun. The music is by
the great John Kirkpatrick and his All Star band. Issued under licence
from the BBC.
Social dances featured
on the DVD are The Big Set, Small Circle Dance. Long Set Dance, Lucky
Seven, Bridge of Athlone, Town and Country Square Dance, Buttered
Peas, Clopton Bridge, and La Russe. Dances not featured on DVD but
music and instructions included are Patacake Polka, Cumberland Square
Eight, Circassian Circle and Nottingham Swing.
EFDSS gratefully recognises
the funding from the Linbury Trust.

John
Kanakanaka
New
playground games video from EFDSS - Price: £15.00
Accompanying instruction book with words and music - Price: £10.00
'John Kanakanaka' is an
exciting new playground video published by the EFDSS and funded by
London's Museums Archive and Libraries, Archives and Learning Grant
Programme. Featuring pupils aged 5-11 yrs of Thomas Fairchild Community
School, Hackney, E. London, and filmed by celebrated archivist Doc
Rowe, the video demonstrates 25 playground songs, skipping, counting
and clapping games - the traditional way of learning the basic building
blocks of music, song and dance. And it's great fun! There will be
workshops for ideas on how to get the most from the video.
'John Kanakanaka' shows
the musical treasures to be found both in archives and in today's
playground. Hackney school music teacher Pam Davies has clearly enthused
her pupils with her selection from the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library
archives. The pupils have contributed in turn by sharing their games
with Pam.
'John
Kanakanaka' is an invaluable resource for play organisers, community
leaders, teachers, home educators, in fact anyone who wants to learn
and share skills in the traditional manner. After watching and imitating
the games on the video the children can explore their natural creativity
by incorporating words and ideas of their own. These games also encourage
fitness, co-ordination, language practice, tolerance, negotiating
skills and team-work - all things that children need to grow into
healthy, happy, functioning adults.
The book has helpful tips
and teaching suggestions as well as pictures of the children performing
the games.

Keep
Dancing
Complete dance instructions
inside jewel case including two Maypole dances.
This CD resulted from collaboration
between the EFDSS, Hertfordshire Folk Association and four local ceilidh
bands; Easy Weasel, Flowers of the Thorn, Jump the Vortex, and Time
of Your Life. Each year a spectacular dance event for hundreds of
young people is organised at Hatfield House by Hertfordshire Folk
Association and creating music for rehearsals is an important part
of the preparation. This CD was produced not only to provide a rehearsal
music resource for those attending the festival, but also to be generally
available for other groups wanting an economical and handy dance resource
for festivals and celebrations.
The dances are graded into
three levels of accessibility to help both new dancers and new teachers.
The music and dances cover
over 300 years of history and include examples from the sixteen and
seventeen hundreds as well as one dance created by children from a
Newcastle school in the late twentieth century. Alongside old tunes
that have long been associated with certain dances this CD offers
new tunes written by the featured musicians. All of which demonstrate
the living and growing nature of our music and dance heritage.
Level One (easier):
Big Set Mixer, Brighton Camp, Circassian Circle, Cumberland Reel,
I Want to be Near You, Moonstruck, Muffin Man, Patacake Polka
Level Two: Farmers
Jig, Caerphilly March, Clopton Bridge, Durham Reel, Jumping Joan,
Penny on the Water, Welcome to Welbeck
Level Three (harder):

English Traditional Dancing, KS2
Wendy Knight
The
second edition of this popular resource is enhanced with photos and
diagrams to help new teachers and community leaders pass on this very
healthy and happy activity. Designed as an educational resource for
beginners of all ages the instructions are arranged so that each new
dance increases in complexity as you work through the book and each
new dance figure is explained in greater detail. All the dances were
either collected or based on dances that were collected during the
early part of the twentieth century. At this time enthusiasts and
researchers were keen to both archive and pass on the traditional
cultural heritage of England and we hope that in using this resource
a new generation will come to appreciate this living tradition.
A full 78-minute, bursting-at-the-seams,
27 track CD accompanies the book, replacing the previous audio tape.
Along with many of the original recordings we have added another ten
exciting tracks. Players include John Kirkpatrick, Leigh Dyer, Alison
Ellacott, Maggie Fletcher, Vic Godrich, Chris Jewell, Andy Johnson,
Richard Smith, and Anna and Paul Tabbush plus others. £12 plus £1.50
