Using oral history and ethnographic methodologies, the project explores the revival of British folk dance through its various stages during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It takes note of the most recent resurgence of interest, fuelled by a return to traditional folk music in the 1990s, as well as films and documentaries charting the revival of dance forms. The PhD research will contribute to the continued development of EFDSS’ Vaughan Williams Memorial Library and its archive collections.
“Dance is an often under-researched yet a thriving and significant aspect of our cultural heritage in Britain. This scholarship to research the many forms and practices of dance within the second folk revival is a great opportunity to expand the field. The Society, its Vaughan Williams Memorial Library and the Centre for Dance Research at Roehampton are natural partners to carry this forwards.”
Theresa Buckland, Professor of Dance History and Ethnography, Roehampton University
“The English Folk Dance and Song Society are delighted to be involved in this exciting development in dance research. It is a significant step for the field, one which we are confident will provide important work and discussion, as well as more recognition for folk dance in higher education.”
Katy Spicer, EFDSS Chief Executive
